Microsoft has reported a decline in its profit even though its new operating system, Windows 8, seems to be doing well and has received positive response from the market.
According to the figures released by the company, Microsoft’s profit in the quarter that ended last December was $6.4 billion. This is lower than what the company earned in previous years.
Still, some analysts believe that Microsoft has done well to reach that figure. Its new operating system seems to be doing well but it is not the only reason behind the company’s profit. The company has maintained its presence in the PC market along with other markets and this has made it register such numbers. Otherwise, the profit could have been even lower. Meanwhile, there are reports that Microsoft’s Office products have not been doing well in the market and that is why it could not register better profit.
BBC quoted Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer as saying:
“Our big, bold ambition to re-imagine Windows as well as launch Surface and Windows Phone 8 has sparked growing enthusiasm with our customers and unprecedented opportunity and creativity with our partners and developers.”
This has been an awkward season for many of the technology giants. Recently, Apple also posted somewhat unconvincing figures in its quarterly report after which its shares have been on a constant decline. In such scenario, Microsoft seems to have done well. Colin Gillis at BGC Financial said of Microsoft’s performance in the quarter, via BBC:
“[Microsoft] has multiple revenue streams that are still very nice businesses… I would say it’s a very nice vanilla quarter. In this environment, we’ll take it.”
