Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer Comments On Surface Sales Numbers

On November 11, Mobile Syrup reported that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer “has gone on record with a French paper called Le Parisienan and announced that initial sales of the comapny’s tablets have been “modest,” but highlighted that a “higher-end” and “unique” version of the Surface will be coming out soon – Surface Pro running Windows 8 – that will probably boost numbers.”

This was breaking news because ever since the launch by Microsoftmuch talk about Windows 8 and the Surface RT tablet, the maker of the world most used operating system had not released any sales numbers. Ballmer’s comments gave analysts and observers some view of how the new hardware was performing for the US based software giant. Mobile Syrup soon updated their original report after Microsoft released a clarification of their CEO’s statement.

The note from Microsoft had the following text:

“When asked about Surface, Steve’s use of the term “modest” was in relation to the company’s approach in ramping up supply and distribution of Surface with Windows RT, which has only been available via our online store and certain Microsoft retail stores in the U.S. While our approach has been modest, Steve notes the reception to the device has been “fantastic” which is why he also stated that “soon, it will be available in more countries and in more stores.”

There are no specific sales numbers still but it certain that the 10.6-incher Surface RT tablet is going to have a lot of competition in the sector thanks to current tablet kings Apple and upcoming manufacturer Samsung. Microsoft’s $519 tablet also has to fight off competition from the BlackBerry PlayBook and Google’s Nexus 7.

Canadian buyers seem to be following trends from other markets according to a Mobile Syrup report, as 200 people got in line at the Toronto Eaton Centre to buy the Microsoft tablet. For now users will just have to wait until Microsoft releases any figures about its new tablet. Observers may have to wait until after the holiday season because Microsoft would like to make sure it gets big totals before it declares any numbers for the media.
