Co-founded by Victoria B.C.’s own Lisa Bettany along with the development team Tap Tap Tap, Camera+ is an application that allows you to take and adapt the highest quality photographs possible with your iPhone and Android devices.
Although talks have been private, Twitter executives, led by founder Jack Dorsey have met with the development team of the application to discuss a potential acquisition of the firm. Although the move may be perceived as a reply to Facebook’s bold and expensive acquisition of Instagr.am, the move could be a shrewd play for Twitter given the quality and functionality of the application. As reported by Bloomberg, talks seem to have stalled due to geographic drama involving the wide spread Tap Tap Tap team’s reluctance to collect and relocate to San Francisco with the Twitter family. Although ten of their employees currently reside in Silicon Valley, another twenty are scattered in Austria, New Zealand and Spain to name a few.
The aforementioned Bettany, a professional photographer cum entrepreneur has added valuable input into the application allowing for exposure settings, various shooting modes (including a simple timer for self-portraits), grid for ideal photos as well as a 6x digital built in zoom. Other new features include Clarity, which allows for already captured photos to be improved upon in order to create significantly improved photos as well as filter type effects and scene modes for a fully controlled picture experience.
Although the application has been in existence for 2 years, it has only been downloaded a relatively modest 7.5 million times as compared to the slightly younger Instagr.am which has a staggering 50 million downloads. A Twitter acquisition or at least news of such an event will likely create a great deal of buzz around the app and bring it customer recognition and increased interest. The app certainly does not lack professional recognition however, being named one of Time Magazine’s 100 apps of 2011.
Twitter’s founder Jack Dorsey as has been reported in many sources to date was one of the initial investors in Instagr.am and was known to use the service often prior to their acquisition by rival Facebook. He has since disassociated himself with the service, opting instead to create a Camera+ account. Twitter was rumoured at one time to have been interested in acquiring Instagr.am, and may need to act quickly to integrate a potent photo taking application into its service or risk being left behind.
