Moglue, a company that is based in both New York and Seoul, Korea has created software that allows anyone and their uncle to create rich and highly interactive eBooks regardless of their experience level. The company that was a finalist in the TechCrunch Disrupt Beijing has two related products, MoglueBuilder, which allows the creation of interactive eBooks as well as MoglueBooks, which serves as an iOS marketplace for those created pieces.
MoglueBuilder, which is available on both Mac and Windows platforms is currently in open beta format and according to Moglue has been downloaded in excess of 20,000 times by authors and content creators worldwide in the first weeks.
The program uses a drag and drop user interface to allow for the creation of eBooks of all kinds, although the current focus is on the lucrative and creative children’s book sector. Interactivity can be integrated via various sounds, images, effects and animations to bring stories to life and increase the overall reading experience. All elements of the user experience can be customized to the creator’s desire, including audio features such as background music as well as narrated dialogue.
Currently, any and all books that are created using MoglueBuilder and published within MoglueBooks must be set to free until the end of this summer. This is to serve as a measuring stick for demand and activity within MoglueBooks. Once the trial period has passed however, books can be priced and sold individually.
According to CEO Taewoo Kim in an interview with TechCrunch, the goal is that authors will be able to publish their Moglue created eBooks directly to the Apple App Store using their very own accounts. A similar arrangement will be available in the Google Play and Amazon App Store as well. Although MoglueBooks is not yet available on the Android platform, it will be in the very near future.
In the meantime however, things are definitely looking up for Moglue. After securing six-figure investments from Korean and U.S. investors alike, the start-up secured a coup with Korea’s largest offline and online bookstore Kyobo reaching an agreement to publish content using Moglue’s technology. Kyobo was so impressed with Kim and his company that they have elected to use Moglue as their platform for expansion into the interactive eBook business. From what we can tell, this company has made significant inroads in what promises to be a growing and lucrative industry as more demand will exist for interactive content.
