Numerous reports have pointed out earlier that Apple’s long time partner Foxconn also known as Hon Hai is now looking to stretch its business beyond the Cupertino-based company. According to these reports, Foxconn not only wants to build electronic devices for other companies, but it is also planning to produce products under its own name. However, these reports were not confirmed until now, as Mozilla has recently revealed that it has added Foxconn to its list of major allies, who will manufacture electronic devices for the company, including smartphones. Mozilla has divulged that Foxconn has signed a deal with them that will enable the Taiwanese manufacturing giant to build devices for the company that will be running its very own Firefox operating system. In addition, Foxconn has made it known that it will also work on devices like tablets and televisions.

Foxconn is taking these steps in order to reduce revenue dependence on the California-based tech giant, as a low demand of Apple products during the first quarter of 2013 has also affected the profits of Hon Hai Precision. But now with Mozilla’s Firefox OS, the Taiwan-based company is looking beyond Apple by taking a greater role with software and services and not just hardware. The general manager of Foxconn, Young Li has explained his company’s new role in a statement given below:

“Currently, Foxconn is executing on a vision of ‘eight screens, one network, and one cloud’ with all our strength. Besides the native advantages of hardware manufacturing, Foxconn is also developing a brand new integrated approach to providing hardware, software, content, and services.”

This shift in gears is surely a big move by Foxconn, especially considering its previous role in which the company has manufactured products for other companies by staying behind the scene. It sounds as if Foxconn is looking to become a company like Samsung or maybe Apple.

However, Foxconn is not the only partner of the free software community, as several other top tech companies like Sony, Huawei, ZTE and 18 other telecom companies have signed agreements with Mozilla to work on its Firefox-based devices.

Interestingly Foxconn has made this announcement a few days after the leading news paper Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is looking to shift its business from the Taiwanese company by giving the manufacturing order of the inexpensive iPhone to a rival company. It seems that after that report things changed quite swiftly at Foxconn.
