Users today have plenty of options when it comes to mobile apps. There is diverse choice that ranges from assistance in routine matters like exercise, healthy eating, managing daily tasks or business issues or any other thing in order to make everyday life easier. This increase in apps is all thanks to the smartphone which users are adapting quite fast. As a result of that every other day we get to see or hear about a new application that assists users in their daily life. Following this philosophy, Nike has recently rolled out a brand new app for Apple’s iPhone that will enable designers to gauge the sustainability of materials which they are planning to use in new products, according to Wired.

“Some time ago, a team of employees at Nike was given a special project: Cataloging the 75,000-some items found in the company’s vast materials library and giving them each a score based on their environmental impact and long-term sustainability. No one had really done anything like it before, and it ultimately took the team six years to complete. Now, you can flick through their findings on your iPhone …”

Nike got the idea to develop this app when the company first introduced Materials Sustainability Index (MSI) on its website to encourage various manufacturers to make the most of the data. However, later Nike thought that manufacturers most probably use MSI at the production stage and till that time majority of the decisions related to the material have been finalised.

Therefore, manufacturers were unable to make the most of the data related to materials. As a result of that, Nike decided to develop an app for designers that will comprise of MSI data, so manufacturers could know about the sustainability of the material before it hits the production stage.

Talking about the new app, VP of Sustainable Business and Innovation at Nike, Hannah Jones said that, “What you want to do is put tools in the hands of designers that are bespoke to their means at the moment of truth, which is the moment of design. The app is really tailored to help them make real-time predictive choices around the materials they use.”

This was not the first time that Nike has done something different apart from pushing sustainability in its products, as the company has also introduced waste reducing technology like Flyknit.
