North Korea has introduced a smartphone that is manufactured domestically. North Korea is known as one of the most isolated and censored societies in the world. Arirang, a well-known mobile phone manufacturing company in the country, has introduced Google’s Android operating system in its new smartphone.

Martyn Williams, North Korea Tech said, “They are probably made to order by a Chinese manufacturer and shipped to the factory where they are inspected before going on sale.”

North Korean leader Kim Jong-UN, during the visit to the factory, named the phone on the most popular folk song of Korea. Also, he has given a detailed info on the performance, quality and packing of the new Aririang handset. The Arirang handset is properly monitored and approved at the factory before going to the market. According to the some analysts the aim of Arirang is to introduce a handset for North Koreans that is officially approved by the company and has no fault.

In North Korea the use of the Internet is virtually non-existent, due to which the country comes at the bottom when a survey is conducted on media freedom. The mobile phones were officially introduced in the country in 2008 through a joint venture with Egyptian telecom firm Orascom. Now, about 2 million people in North Korea use mobile phones.

In 2002, intranet was domestically introduced in the country. According to the latest survey there are very few state bodies that have their own website.  The country has a number of social disruptions due to which there are some telecommunication companies that only provide services inside the country but not outside, such as Koryolink.

Also, there are very few intranet users in the country due to which they are totally cut off from the entire world. Only the super-elite classes (a few hundred people) have full access to the Internet. However, now companies are starting to smuggle mobile phones from China that allows them to connect with other Chinese servers. Also, they can now make some international calls. Arirang is now introducing mobile phones that allow the North Korean people to use the best service while keeping the strictly guaranteeing security in mind.
