As many as 51 million new internet users were reported in China in the year 2012, taking the total number on internet users in the country to 564 million, according to the China Internet Network Information Centre.

The number rose 10 per cent to reach the said figure, and the credit of this surge goes to increasing dependence of the users on smartphones and tablets to access internet. As more and more people continue to use smartphones and tablets in China, the number of people accessing internet has also increased, and the number is expected to further grow in the years to come.

There is strict internet control in China, and while the government encourages the users to access internet for educational and other constructive purposes, it has imposed serious regulations on accessing the content it deems obscene.

Meanwhile, it has also been reported that the use of desktop computers and laptops declined, while the use of mobile technology increased during the said period. This clearly shows that the mobile technology has played a major role in increasing the number of internet users in China. Furthermore, it has also been reported that a few users also used the mobile technology for online shopping.

This development has forecast positive trends for the internet industry in China, and the country’s internet penetration is expected to further increase during the next few years as more and more people start using smartphones and tablets, and rely on these gadgets for accessing internet rather than using their personal computers.
