The Oscar awards are a popular event for film buffs from around the world. The internet is usually filled with predictions about who will win a statue while others cover the event live on Twitter and blogs. Although many of today’s movies are made using some of the latest technologies and techniques, there are still some that make it on to the world stage and surprise us with the film makers ingenuity and use of technology. One great example is Searching For Sugar Man which has been nominated by the Academy for Best Documentary. The most interesting part about the fil other than the subject matter is the fact that the movie needed a iPhone to make it onto the screen. The Academy Award nominated documentary was originally shot using 8mm film. However, the producers ran out of money before they could complete their work and the film makers were left with a major predicament. Malik Bendjelloul, the director of Searching For Sugar Man, used his iPhone and an app called 8mm Vintage Camera. The remaining scenes were filmed using the $1.99 app and used to complete the entire documentary. When people view the finished product they will not have any idea which scenes were filmed using the expensive 8mm film or the amazing iPhone app.

The film makers are definitely excited about their nomination but the makers of the 8mm Vintage Camera app, Nexvio, are also thrilled. The firms President, Hongyu Chi, is over the moon and states that, “It’s like the wildest dream come true.”

According to Chi that his company’s app has been used by a lot of musicians that are strapped for cash to create music videos for their songs. Searching for Sugar Man is the only feature length film he has ever heard of to utilize the app for its project. The end result has had a major effect on Chi who claims, “Watching the film is a soul-searching journey for me.”

The documentary is a great story of two Cape Town fans of American musician Rodriguez. The artist had a large fan base in South Africa but never gained much popularity in the United States. The documentary has been received quite well and has already gotten the 2013 BAFTA award for the Best Documentary category across the pond. Other awards include the Special Jury Prize and the Audience Award for best international documentary at the Sundance Film Festival.
