Ouya announced on November 30 that they would be shipping out the developer kits for their tiny gaming console on December 28th with the company also stating that developers would have the Software Development Kit or ODK available for download on exactly the same day. Many people were also excited to see a image of the Android-powered console which several hands holding the device up. The picture makes its quite clear that the gaming console easily fits in a person hand.
According to Ouya, once the console ships it should reach recipients “within a couple days”. The company still expects to have the finalized gaming boxes ready for customers by March 2013. However, the Julie Uhrman created startup has not yet announced an exact date with their latest press release.
The company has stated that “every Ouya will be a dev console” meaning that users will have about the same functionalities the current dev consoles have and may be quite identical in shape and size. However, the company did say that there is a difference between the final dev version that is “pretty special” but no indication on exactly what that is was given.
Developers and backers who have funded the dev level kit will be some of the first to get started on game development while also seeing how games function on Google’s latest Android Jelly Bean.
The dev kits are only being shipped to people who funded the project on Kickstarter while others can purchase the device for $99 directly from the company site. The Ouya has been quite successful because it tries “to open up the last closed game platform — the TV”.
