Plastic Logic is a firm that had big plans for the e-reader market but discontinued its own product and focused on its flexible color e-paper screen. The demise of the QUE proReader also led to job cuts and the closure of the British firm’s offices in the US. However, one good thing that did come out of the scenario was that the company’s e-paper will be sold a number of different manufacturers for use in their devices. The company is also promoting another innovative product at this year’s CES in Las Vegas and has been grabbing a lot of attention. The firm has partnered with Intel and Queen’s University to create the PaperTab. This unique device is 10.7-inch tablet concept which uses a flexible, e-paper touch screen instead of the rigid screens on most tablets today.

For now the device is only a prototype that uses a Core i5 processor to power it up for solo use. However, the tablet has been designed to be used with other PaperTabs.  The developers have built position awareness into the flexible tablet allowing several PaperTabs to join together on a large shared work space so that a team can collaborate. The device also lets a user tap content on one tablet and send it to a waiting document that is on a separate tablet.

The flexible screen also has some pretty innovative uses like bending a corner to flip through pages. Of course the ability to mimic conventional paper and durability of the screen are major plus points. The PaperTab will get a major showcase on January 8th at the CES.
