Calgary based technology firm Poynt launched an upgraded version of its iPhone app last week for the iOS platform. Poynt is a local search tool that is intended to be accessed from smartphones to provide the user with results based on their location. Poynt had initial success with Research In Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry platform but the declining fortunes of RIM in the smartphone sector has forced Poynt to look at other platforms. The company has since added apps for Apple’s iOS and Google Android platforms in order to reach out to the larger and more rapidly growing markets.

Poynt has had some bumps on the road on Apple’s platform but was able to capture a large chunk of its current market on Google’s mobile Operating System. According to information provided by the company, Poynt has a total of 10 million users on Android, accounting for a little over half of the app’s entire user base. This is in stark contrast to the low numbers and rate of acceptance on the iPhone and Poynt is eager to correct this issue. The iPhone is the most successful smartphone in history and it would be major boost for point to have a strong footing on the Apple platform.

Andrew Osis, the CEO of Poynt talked about the changes they are making to their iOS app stating that, “iPhone users are accustomed to clean, easy-to-navigate apps that are, above anything else, intuitive and fast. With the integration of these new features, we have an app that iPhone users can relate to and will want to use whether they are taking the time to plan a perfect date night or are in a rush to find a gas station.” Osis went on to add that, “With 132% growth year over year, our current unique iPhone user base is poised to expand and strengthen significantly. We anticipate that this new version of Poynt will ensure the Company’s long-term success on the iOS platform.”

The changes that Poynt has made to the iPhone app include an updated “Grid” interface, weather forecasts and features that are aimed at making the use of the app smoother and intuitive for the user.
