The US government’s secret surveillance program, PRISM, seems to have become a headache for major tech companies which were highlighted in The Guardian and Washington Post’s reports and authorities. They are receiving severe criticism from the general public, who have learned from these reports that tje NSA is keeping an eye on every email, call, video call, chat and other data with the assistance of tech companies, which have given the agency direct access to their servers. The Director of Intelligence have asserted that Washington Post and Guardian’s reports have numerous mistakes, it appears that his statement was not able to calm people down. US President Barack Obama decided to step up and take his nation into confidence over the PRISM case. For this purpose Obama held a press conference in which he declared that PRISM does not apply to U.S. citizens and it does not apply to people living the United States,” according to CNBC.
This announcement from President Obama has reaffirmed that previous reports which indicated that PRISM is not for US citizens, but at the same time it did not reject the claims which says that the data of US citizens is being gathered unintentionally. In addition to this, during the speech Obama did not shed light over little details of the secret surveillance program, which describes how PRISM actually works. In spite of this Obama believes that the government has “struck the right balance”
“In the abstract, you can complain about ‘big brother’ and how this is a potential program wrong amok. But when you actually look at the details, I think we’ve struck the right balance.”
Talking about the leaks, US President said that he is not pleased with it because “there’s a reason why these programs are classified. I think there’s a suggestion that somehow, any classified program is a quote-unquote secret program which means that it’s somehow suspicious. But the fact of the matter is, in our modern history, there’s been a whole range of programs that have been classified.”
During the press conference, Obama also addressed the claims, which says that the government gathers record of each phone made in the US:
“When it comes to telephone calls, nobody is listening to your telephone calls. That is not what this program is about. As was indicated, what the intelligence community is doing is, looking at those numbers, and durations of calls. They are not looking at people’s names and they’re not looking at content. But, by sifting through this so-called metadata they may identify potential leads with respect to folks who might engage in terrorism.”
