Sharp Corporation, a Japanese designer and manufacturer of electronic products, has reportedly almost halted the production of the 9.7-inch screens being made for Apple’s iPad, Reuters reported citing sources.

The company has brought down the production of these screens to the minimum level so as to keep the operations running, and it is not shipping iPad panels either. Although the reason behind this development is unknown, and the report is not even confirmed by the relevant entities, a major reason behind the lack of production of these screens could be Apple’s focus on its mini iPad.

The mini iPad will be cost-effective and will target the market in the developing countries where people cannot easily afford the brand at its current price. To increase its market penetration, Apple has decided to come up with a cheaper version of iPad, and its products for the new markets will reportedly use cheaper material in production.

In absence of any official confirmation about this development, or about the reason behind the development, Reuters has mentioned a few possibilities that could be the driving force behind this move. Except for Apple’s focus on mini iPad, the reasons behind the decline in manufacturing the 9.7-inch screens include drop in demand; Apple’s motives of shifting to another company for manufacturing these screens; and an update in the product’s design.

Sharp Corporation is not the only company that manufactures screens for Apple. Other companies that do the same are Samsung and LG. According to Reuters, both companies denied commenting on the development with respect to decline in the screen production.
