Mike Lazaridis, the founder and former CEO of Canadian technology giant Research In Motion (RIM), has funded a new initiative called the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre which opened on September 21 at the University of Waterloo. Lazaridis has given the center $100 million dollars as funds to develop a science and technology research center that will rival the best in the world.
Lazaridis has very big plans for the center that bears his name and he has made it clear in an interview with Bloomberg that the center will “absolutely” be the Bell Labs of the 21st century. It seems the newly completed center will focus on quantum computing and nanotechnology because these are areas that Lazaridis believes are needed to get past the barriers of traditional computing.
The center may be something that Lazardis will be spending a lot of time with because he has a reduced role at RIM. With the decline in fortunes of the firm, Lazardis has found himself sidelined as the company tries to recover from a very steep fall in sales. The company has been losing global market share to competitors like Apple and Samsung who have come to dominate the market that RIM singlehandedly created. The firm is planning to launch its new BlackBerry 10 Operating System and associated phones by next year in hopes of making a turn around.
