Online streaming music sites have been locked in heated battle over which service will become the dominant name in the sector. Rdio took another step closer to becoming a winner when it announced today that it is giving up to six months of free streaming music to users that live in approximately all of its current markets. New users in the included countries can sign up to get the free service and enjoy the massive 18 million song database from the streaming music startup. The countries that have the service include the U.S., U.K., Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden.
A Rdio spokesman claimed the offer is expected to “attract international users and to heat things up competitively as we expect this will drive a lot more users.”
The amount of time a user gets the service for free is base don how much music is streamed. The signed up user will see a counter on the top of the profile page that indicates how much more they can stream for free. The more a user streams the quicker the free service runs out.
Of course a user can easily upgrade to a paid subscription to get unlimited music and also access mobile apps so that they can enjoy their music on the go. In the U.S. the company charges $4.99 for Rdio Web and a user can stream unlimited music on the web. The $9.99 Rdio Unlimited gives unlimited Web and mobile access along with the ability to listen to music offline.
Currently the free service will only be for the web application and users will be able “to pick and choose which songs they want to listen to, create playlists, see and hear playlists from some of their favorite artists, and discover new music by following friends, people with similar music preferences, and tastemakers. Users can also share their soundtracks through Facebook or Twitter.”
