Ontario-based Relay Ventures made it known on Thursday, June 27th that the ex-CEO of The Woodbridge Company, Geoff Beattie, has joined the company as the new chairman. Prior to joining Relay Ventures as chairman, Beattie served The Woodbridge Company, a private investment holding company for Thomson family of Canada, for 15 years as president. During this period Beattie was also working as an advisor to Relay Ventures and his contribution towards the company was pretty influential especially in the launch of its first mobile fund back in 2008.

On this occasion, co-founder and managing partner of Relay Venture, John Albright said that, “We have a strong history working with Geoff, and bringing him on board as Chairman is an important part of our strategic plan to establish Relay Ventures as Canada’s pre-eminent venture capital firm.”

Relay Ventures’ co-founder and managing partner, Kevin Talbot said that, “To be a globally competitive Canadian-based venture capital firm requires a base of knowledge, expertise and contacts that will allow us to scale into a larger sustainable business. Geoff has a wealth of knowledge and experience in strategy, governance and business operations that will support our long-term plans and benefit each of our portfolio companies. We are thrilled to have him on our team.”

Beattie on the other hand said that, “I’ve had the privilege of working with John and Kevin since the inception of Relay and look forward to helping them aggressively pursue new opportunities and achieve their objectives. As Chairman, I will readily share my insights, advice and extensive network to further establish the firm as a global force in the rapidly growing mobile industry.”

Beattie is not only an experienced corporate director, but he is also well-respected and at this point in time he is rendering his services on the boards of different companies such as Maple Leaf Foods Inc., Royal Bank of Canada and General Electric Company. Apart from this, Beattie is also serving as a trustee in Toronto-based University Health Network. The veteran chairman holds a degree of law from the University of Western Ontario, so he also served as a law firm in Toronto, Torys LLP as a partner.

On the other side, Relay Ventures is the only venture fund in this part of the world that invests in early stage mobile computing and its portfolio includes over 49 mobile start-ups as well as later stage companies. On top of it Relay Venture is the only venture company that has a permanent location in Silicon Valley.
