Apple has a hit on its hands with the new iPhone 5 and iOS 6 tandem. The hardware and software were released at about the same time and have taken the market in the US and Canada by storm. Reports indicates that after two weeks of being available for download, 60% of iPhone users in the U.S. and Canada updated their devices to iOS 6. The positive news about Apple’s latest mobile operating system was derived from data provided by analytics firm Chitika and reported by CNET.
The numbers can be further broken down to show that more than half the iPhone devices in all of North America are now running iOS 6. Users of Apple’s iPad tablet are second in terms of adoption with 45% of devices being upgraded to iOS6 and the iPod trails in third with only 39% on the latest iOS. What is also interesting is that a previous report by Chikita had stated that after only 24 hours of release on September 19, 15% of users had installed iOS 6.
Chitika praised Apple in a blog post and also compared its performance to Google by stating that, “Overall, this data points to Apple doing an outstanding job of keeping their user base up-to-date with the latest OS. By comparison, Google’s latest data shows only 22 percent of its users being on its two most recent versions of Android.”
When Apple got ready to release iOS 6 it claimed that it was “The World’s Most Advanced Mobile Operating System” and boasted about the addition of 200 new features. This included the now notorious iOS6 Maps, more Siri functions, a lot of Facebook integration and many more updates. Users who own the iPhone 3GS and all newer iPhone iterations, the 4th generation or newer iPod Touch and iPad 2 can download and install iOS6 on their devices. Others will not be able to do so because their products will not support the latest OS.
