Amazon is a multinational e-commerce giant that has not only done well in the electronic commerce sector, but has also done well in the tablet market thanks to its Kindle e-readers such including the Kindle Fire. However, the multinational company has no plans to restrict itself to the aforementioned markets, as it is looking to expand its wings by exploring some new products and one of them could be the smartphone. This claim has been made by the Wall Street Journal in its latest report, which says that this year Amazon is extending its hardware department by offering users two smartphones, which includes a top-end model that will boast a 3D screen. The report also divulged that Amazon has integrated the technology in its high-end mobile that would allow the users to interact with the display of the phone through their eyes. It’s the better version of eye-tracking technology that is already offered by some of the existing smartphones in the market.

Here is an extract from WSJ’s report:

“One of the devices is a high-end smartphone featuring a screen that allows for 3-D images without glasses, these people said. Using retina-tracking technology, images on the smartphone would seem to float above the screen like a hologram and appear three-dimensional at all angles, they said. Users may be able to navigate through content using just their eyes, two of the people said.”

It was also reported that Amazon is working on an audio-only streaming device as well apart from the two smartphones. In addition, some reports have also indicated that the US-based e-commerce corporation is also producing a digital media receiver like Apple TV in order to compete with the Cupertino-based company in the TV market.

It is anticipated that since Amazon uses Android operating system from Google in its Kindle Fire slates therefore the future hardware devices of the company could also feature a similar OS. WSJ has claimed in its report that these novel devices from Amazon are likely to see first light in the next few months, but the projects could be scheduled for a variety of reasons at any time:

“Though Amazon has goals of releasing some of these devices in coming months, these people cautioned that some or all of the devices could be shelved because of performance, financial or other concerns.”

It is noteworthy to mention here that so far none of the smartphone manufacturers were able to develop a 3-D display and nor an eye-tracking technology that is as good as Amazon is said to be integrating in its high-end smartphone. So it would be great feat for Amazon if it really manages to produce such a smartphone.
