IDC, a well-known research firm has released its 2013 forecast report for worldwide shipments of tablet on Tuesday, March 12th. In the latest report the IDC has not only improved its previous prediction of worldwide shipments of tablets from 172.4 million to 190.9 million units during this year, but has also asserted that Android-based slates will see a huge demand and they will eat into the market share of Apple’s iPad. IDC believes that Android powered tablets will be able to grasp 48.8 percent share in the slate market, whereas Apple’s iPad is expected to take home about 46 percent of the share. It means that IDC sees Apple’s share in tablet market to drop by 5 percent. Given that in the 2012 forecast report from IDC, the research firm had noted that the market share of Apple in tablet space is 51 percent, while Android holds 41.5 percent stake in the same market.
Besides this, IDC has also predicted that the tablets that are below or measure about 8-inch will see a big demand in the future. Moreover, IDC estimates that Windows-based slates are also likely to increase their market share from 1 percent to 7.4 percent by 2017 at the cost of Android and iOS.
IDC’s Research Analyst for Tablet Tracker, Jitesh Ubrani said that, “One in every two tablets shipped this quarter was below 8 inches in screen size. And in terms of shipments, we expect smaller tablets to continue growing in 2013 and beyond. Vendors are moving quickly to compete in this space as consumers realize that these small devices are often more ideal than larger tablets for their daily consumption habits.”
“Android’s gains come at the expense of Apple’s iOS, which is expected to slip from 51% of the market in 2012 to 46% in 2013. Longer term, both iOS and Android will eventually relinquish some market share to Windows-based tablets, with Windows 8 predicted to grow from 1% of the market in 2012 to 7.4% in 2017. IDC expects Windows RT growth to remain below 3% during the forecast period.”
There is no doubt that demand for tablets is increasing and is diminishing the PC business, as users are now getting accustomed to these slim slates that are easy to carry and perfect for reading online books, newspapers or any other text. Apart from this many users are buying tablets to watch videos or to play video games.
