Digitimes has come up with a new report according to which Apple’s component sources have claimed that the Cupertino-based company will slash the shipments of iPad Mini to 10 to 12 million units for the second quarter of this year. Sources also revealed that this decrease in shipment is expected to touch the 20 percent mark in April and it could possibly drop down to 10 million units. The articles states that, “Apple has reportedly cut its shipments of the iPad mini to between 10-12 million units for the second quarter of 2013, according to industry sources. The figure is based on shipment information given from multiple sources who provide various components for Apple’s iPad mini.”
The Digitimes sources also mentioned the reason behind this adjustment in the production of iPad Mini by saying that it is probably a move to make some room for the forthcoming second generation of the 7.99-inch slate, as the rumour has it that it will be launched in the third quarter of 2013. The reason behind slashing according to sources is that increased competition from “various 7-inch Android tablets.” In addition, Apple has reportedly also adjusted its shipment estimates of the 10-inch iPad series for 2013, as the sources said that, “Apple recently adjusted shipment estimates for its iPad and iPad mini products in 2013 to 33 million and 55 million, respectively.”
Although, the report from Digitimes has not received any confirmation from Apple, DisplaySearch has claimed at the start of this month that iPad Mini with Retina display would see the first light in 2013 and the displays of the forthcoming device are likely to be supplied by AUO, Sharp, Japan Display or LG Display. Several tech analysts have also echoed similar claims, which suggest that Apple is working on the next generation of iPad Mini.
IDC has recently reported that demand for the iPad Mini has doubled within the last six months, as the research analyst for Tablet Tracker of the firm, Jitesh Ubrani said that, “One in every two tablets shipped this quarter was below 8 inches in screen size. And in terms of shipments, we expect smaller tablets to continue growing in 2013 and beyond. Vendors are moving quickly to compete in this space as consumers realize that these small devices are often more ideal than larger tablets for their daily consumption habits.”
Therefore, it is may be not possible for Apple to cut the numbers of the 8-inch slate’s shipment down unless it is gearing up to bring in the next iPad Mini in its place.
