According to the latest rumours making the rounds in technology circles Korean consumer electronics maker LG is gearing up to bring in the successor to its popular Optimus series which will go by the name of Optimus G2. The report also says that Optimus G2 will see first light during the fall this year, right around the time when its predecessor hit the market a year ago. Optimus G2 is expected to bear a full 1080p HD display and it is likely to have a 5 inch screen.
Earlier rumours were swirling that LG was going to launch Optimus G2 at the CES 2013 but that never happened and the Las Vegas event finished off with out a big smartphone launch from the firm. It now seems that the next most likely event for the launch of Optimus G2 could be the Mobile World Congress that is scheduled to take place in Barcelona between February 25 and 28 of this year.
One reason for not revealing the Optimus G2 at CES 2013 could be that LG likes to release its handsets with the freshest edition of Android. And if one looks at the past they will find that Google usually launches the next version of its mobile platform at the end of May. This logic makes sense and also clarifies why LG is planning to launch Optimus G2 in the fall.
And if this be the case for Optimus G2, then it may be one of the first few devices which will be made available for sale in the market with Android Key Lime Pie 5.0 or whatever the search giant would call its next OS version.
The other possible reason why LG is holding back Optimus G2 could be that the Korean manufacturer may be looking to bring in another device for MWC sooner than the next Optimus handset. This substitute device for Optimus G2 is rumoured to be sporting a quad-core processor, 5.5-inch HD display and will most probably be powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The supposed name of this substitute device could be “GK” and it would also be an attempt from LG to beat Samsung by bringing a bigger and better phone to consumers.
