The introduction of laptops killed the desktop market in previous years and now it seems that tablets are going to do the same to notebooks according to NPD’s DisplaySearch. The report claims that tablets are all set to surpass notebooks in terms of sales for the very first time in the history. In the report the estimated shipment of tablets is 240 million units in comparison to laptops’ shipments of 203 million units during the year. This depicts a strong growth of 64 percent for tablets and a 5 percent drop in notebook sales growth.
There are two major reasons behind this increase in the demand for tablets. As Richard Shim, a NPD analyst explains that people prefer slates over notebooks because they believe this sleek device is more convenient, as it can “turn on instantly,” and is “more portable,” as well, he says. Moreover, tablets replace the keyboard with features like voice, touch and swipe.
The second reason behind the success of tablets, according to Shim is the change that has taken place within the PC business. As major tech companies are now making investments in tablets that has not only brought down the price of its components, but it has also lowered down the average selling price of every slate.
Shim says cheaper tablets have suddenly become more attractive for consumers and it also appears that tablets may not completely destroy the PC business because tablets are for now considered secondary device.
However, according to Business Insider “it’s not that simple,” because “in mature markets, the PC is saturated. And that’s where tablets are secondary devices.” But Shim believes that slates will become primary devices in the emerging markets and if that happens then, it will erase the chances of PC’s growth forever.
