According to a new report from Gartner, the number of mobile phone, tablet and PC shipments will increase by approximately 6 percent during this year and touch the 2.35 billion unit mark. Thanks to ever increasing demand for tablets, as the shipments of the slates are expected to rise by 67.9 percent to touch 202 million units mark, while the shipments of mobile phones will increase by 4.5 percent and their volume is expected to be above 1.8 billion units. However, in contrast to tablet and mobile phone shipments, it is expected that the PC shipments are likely to fall down by 10.6 percent on a year-over-year basis.

The research vice president of Gartner, Carolina Milanesi, said that, “Consumers want anytime-anywhere computing that allows them to consume and create content with ease, but also share and access that content from a different portfolio of products. Mobility is paramount in both mature and emerging markets.”

Even though Android powered tablets are guiding the market by overshadowing iPad sales, in Gartner’s viewpoint Android-based slates are divided, as they are being produced by various manufacturers therefore when it comes to top slate vendor, Apple has left its rival way behind.

Ms. Milanesi said, “Although the numbers seem to paint a clear picture of who the winner will be when it comes to operating systems (OS) in the device market (see Table 2), the reality is that today ecosystem owners are challenged in having the same relevance in all segments. Apple is currently the more homogeneous presence across all device segments, while 90 percent of Android sales are currently in the mobile phone market and 85 percent of Microsoft sales are in the PC market.”

It is interesting to mention here that the research firm is of the opinion that a rising trend of preferring mobile devices over desktop computers is benefitting all manufacturers. In addition to this, Gartner predicted that late Steve Jobs’ company will boost its global shipments of iOS and Mac OS X from below 10 percent to over 14 percent by 2014.

Gartner is not the first research firm that has predicted a rise in the demand for tablets, as previously several reports have also made similar predictions. However, this increase in demand of mobile devices has seriously affected business of traditional heavy weights in the PC industry. Apart from this Microsoft is also facing problems due to the low demand for PCs, as it is getting really tough for the company to sell its software that runs on computers and laptops.
