TomTom, a Dutch manufacturer of automobile navigation systems announced a strategic partnership with RIM at the CTIA Wireless Conference earlier today in New Orleans. The agreement will allow RIM to use TomTom’s revered and acclaimed real-time traffic technology within their BlackBerry applications to provide the most accurate and reliable traffic information to their users.

The clearest example of the integrated technology will be BlackBerry Traffic, which will now be powered by TomTom HD Traffic to provide BlackBerry users with the most complete and accurate up to the minute traffic information available. In addition, BlackBerry Maps and BlackBerry Locate Services will seamlessly integrate TomTom’s navigation software, maps and location content, providing an unprecedented level of access to third party developers to use and integrate the aforementioned software into their own applications as well.

The partnership is being hailed by RIM and TomTom brass as the best mobile travel experience available. Although this is a bold claim, it is difficult to argue with the statistics that cite that TomTom’s traffic information saves commuters an average of 50 minutes in travel time a week (40 hours a year). Clearly the company provides valuable information and will continue to do so via RIM’s devices as well.

The agreement marks another bold step by RIM to re-establish themselves as a player to be reckoned with in the Smartphone market, choosing to synergise with a reputed firm in order to give themselves a distinct and specified advantage over their current competitors.
