Traffic problems in major Canadian cities are growing as the population centers see more people and cars on their streets. Two entrepreneurs, Pierre Lermusieaux and Abed Saab, have tried to solve the problem by releasing an app that will assist people in avoiding traffic jams by utilizing local data to determine the best routes. This new app is called ReRouteMe and it obtains “massive amounts” of data about traffic, weather and construction, which it utilizes to find the most favorable routes.

Another benefit of ReRouteMe is that users can also schedule and save their travelling plans. This will allow the app to monitor the anticipated travelling routes and if it finds factors that can affect the trip, it informs the user in advance.

Saab, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Rhexia explained that, “Our main differentiating factor is not traffic reporting. It is proactively working around traffic by keeping our users one step ahead of traffic and for that, we had to build a custom routing engine.”

With this app the two entrepreneurs from Ottawa are looking to proactively reduce the load of traffic from heavy transfer areas of the city by re-routing the users to a less busy route. In this way the ReRouteMe app will not only reduce the number of cars from heavy traffic areas, but it will also enable travellers to consume less energy and reduce gas emission.

As the marketing strategist and UI designer of ReRouteMe, Jessica Rousseau says that, “The indirect benefits of this application will be reduced gas emissions and saved energy. Hundreds of cars idling in traffic are bad for more than just your peace of mind. We’re already working on the next version, which will have more features for transit users and cyclists, to encourage more people to take bikes rather than cars.”

Besides directing travelers, ReRouteMe also gives them updates related to accidents, weather, construction and news. In addition to this the app also informs them about the local gas prices. Currently, ReRouteMe is available in Toronto, Ottawa and some parts of southern Ontario, but the company has plans to extend it across the country.
