Research In Motion share prices took a slight downward turn after a good run of several weeks due to optimism about the Canadian firms upcoming mobile operating system BlackBerry 10 and its revamped smartphones. The trouble firm has seen its market share drop heavily in North America and also in other parts of the world as competitors like Apple and Samsung made huge gains in key markets. RIM has held on to several developing markets that may help keep the company afloat along with the launch of BB10. That is why it is no surprise that RIM chose its BlackBerry Jam Asia keynote address to make some major announcements.
On November 29, RIM stated in Bangkok, Thailand that it was renaming its app store from BlackBerry AppWorld to BlackBerry World after BlackBerry 10 hits the market. VP of Developer Relations, Alec Saunders, gave some good news for developers by showcasing a Dev Alpha C device with a physical QWERTY keyboard. He revealed a device that looks like the BlackBerry 9900 and runs on BlackBerry 10 so that developers can use to test their apps on an actual smartphone. This device is only for developers and only a limited numbers were made available. The idea of the phones is similar to the Dev Alpha A and Dev Alpha B which were all touch.
RIM is banking on its latest BB10 to reestablish the firm as a contender in the smartphone marketplace. The company has been courting developers to help flesh out its app offerings and attract users that have left for the greener app ecosystems of the iPhone and Android powered devices.
