When it comes to marketing budgets, Samsung and Apple are miles ahead of their rivals because both companies allocate huge funds to market their devices globally. In fact, Samsung has significantly increased its marketing budget and is currently spending more money on advertisement than Apple. This could be judged from the fact that during this year the South Korean manufacturer not only hosted a big event at New York City to launch its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S IV, but also paid a huge amount to live stream that event in Times Square. However, in contrast to Samsung and Apple, Taiwan-based smartphone maker HTC does not have a big marketing budget and it is one of the reasons because of which Taiwanese company has not been able to boost its sales and revenue. Nevertheless, now it appears that HTC has decided to follow in the footsteps of Apple and Samsung and according to a Bloomberg report the company has signed a $12 million deal with famous Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr, who has recently given hit movies like Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes, to promote its products.

According to the two sources of Bloomberg the $12 million deal will enroll Downey into a two-year long marketing campaign for HTC which will include both billboard advertisements and TV spots. In addition to this, the deal will give Downey a certain level of creative control and he will also contribute in all decisions. It was also reported that Downey will feature in the campaign as himself rather than in any of the characters he has played so far. Below is an excerpt from the report:

“Downey will feature in the campaign as himself, not the characters he plays in movies including Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes, and will have final say over creative elements, the people said, declining to be named because the talks aren’t public. The maker of the slim, metal HTC One handset will likely feature Downey in television, print and billboard ads, they said.”

If this report turns out to be true then, it will immensely increase the marketing budget of HTC that has recently launched its flagship smartphone, the HTC One. According to an estimate back in 2012, Taiwan-based manufacturer has spent $1 billion for marketing, whereas Samsung on the other hand spent $10 billion to advertise its products. But now it seems that HTC has finally decided not to “hide” itself any longer and come up as a “bolder” brand through aggressive marketing.

When HTC was contacted to have its say on the rumour, as expected that company said that it has “nothing to announce today on a new marketing campaign.”
