Nokia made a joint announcement with Canadian wireless provider Rogers that the company would be the exclusive carrier for the Nokia Lumia 920 in Canada. The new smartphone is powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phones 8 and is expected to take on Apple’s iPhone 5 with its solid camera and video features. The device has been scheduled to be on sale by November of this year, in time for Christmas.

The statement was made on October 5 and John Boynton, the Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Rogers Communications stated; “Rogers is proud to bring the new Nokia Lumia 920 to our customers looking for the best unified experience and to further extend our leadership as the carrier with the largest LTE superphone selection in Canada. With seamless access to entertainment, sports and business content, the Nokia Lumia 920 offers customers a world leading internet experience powered by the Rogers LTE network.”

Nokia also spoke about the deal as Canada General Manager for Nokia, Don Leeke, stated, “Rogers’ decision to offer the Nokia Lumia 920 in Canada is another example of the forward momentum behind our Lumia devices as well as the broader Windows ecosystem.”

At this point the price of the device has not been revealed, however Nokia is pinning its hopes on the new smartphone to help it gain back some traction in the highly competitive smartphone market which has been dominated by Apple and Google powered devices over the past couple of years. The Finnish company has dominated the cell phone market for some time in the past but the onslaught of smartphones has diminished the firms hold on the market. Furthermore, Korean manufacturer Samsung has taken a huge chunk of the phone makers mobile market for feature phones. Let’s hope that the old stalwart comes through with a solid device to add more competition to a burgeoning market.
