iLounge has reported that Apple plans to manufacture the iPhone 5 Dock Connecter Adapters itself and will not be licensing it out to third party developers. The California based company will be the exclusive seller for the product and reports indicate that the adapters will be sold individually or in packs of three. This news comes after accessory-makers were worried that they would not be able to meet the holiday season demand because Apple had not yet given out the specifications for the next generation Dock Connector accessories.

The iPhone 5 is expected to be revealed by Apple next week and the rumor mills have been churning out a lot of stories. The iLounge report is speculative but fits in with the previous rumors that the new iPhone will have a different and much smaller connector port. Any user that has accessories using the older, larger port will not be able to utilize these products with the iPhone 5 without an adapter. That means a whole new round of buying will need to occur in order for users to use accessories with the latest Apple smartphone. Expected pricing for the Dock Connecter Adapters is speculated to be $10 a pop. The three-pack is reported to be priced at $29 and new USB cables should be $19 per unit.

The root of all the upheaval in the accessory market started when leaks from Apple showed that the new iPhone 5 would have a “9-pin Connector”. Further claims also started pouring in that Apple had stopped approving proposals for accessories that used the connector. At the time manufacturers assumed that the port would be changed and they would be able to get new specs. Now it seems that Apple is following a different strategy and wants to monopolize the Dock Connecter Adapters.

The maker of the iPhone has successfully used this strategy before with its MacBook laptops and its MagSafe connectors. If Apple does corner the market for the adapter and cables they will be looking at some serious cash flow. As is expected manufacturers are not too happy about the prospects of losing business but they cannot do anything about it because Apple can use the law to protect their product. There are rumors that Apple will allow third parties entry in to the market after the company reaches its own unit sales goals of 10 million adapters. However, this is only speculation and is not confirmed by Apple itself.
