It was initially reported that technology and consumer electronics maker Apple is planning to produce a cheaper version of its popular iPhone to capture a bigger market share in developing markets like India and China. Such stories were published in several well-known newspapers and online media sites, which included the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and Digitimes. However, these stories eventually saw a stop when Shanghai Evening News cited an interview with Apple’s SVP Phil Schiller in which he clearly said that the Cupertino company is not looking to produce cheaper iPhone. The chatter was only muted for a short while and Reuters came up with a story which stated that the original SEN story was amended and Apple had contacted the Chinese news agency to change their report. Later, SEN also admitted that they had changed the story but revealed that they had done it on their own. This once again gave way to the new flurry of rumours regarding Apple’s iPhone.

Another sizzling report hit the tech world according to which the outer case of the next low end iPhone could be made of plastic because “the rumor in the supply chain is that the inexpensive iPhone chassis supplier will reportedly be a US-based electronic manufacturing service (EMS) provider.”

In addition to this, “the sources pointed out that the related upstream components for the entry-level iPhone are currently going through validation and the actual product may show up in the market in the second half of 2013.”

Sources of iPhone in Canada says the most likely reason for using plastic in place of aluminum or glass for outer casing would be to lower iPhone’s cost. Plus it was also made known that the low-priced iPhone would have a “chassis mixed with plastic and metal, with the internal metal parts being able to be seen from outside through special design.”

When iPhone maker Foxconn was approached to comment on this latest report the Chinese manufacturer as expected did not give any remarks.
