After it was confirmed that BlackBerry had decided to withdraw from the Japan market recently, there are now rumours doing the rounds that the Canadian-based smartphone manufacturer is considering withdrawing from the South Korea market.
According to Korean news wire, Yonhap, BlackBerry had been expected to take this step since it decided to withdraw from the Japan markets. Many analysts strongly suggested that the company would withdraw from other markets too because it does not get hefty sales from this region.
Although no official announcement has been made, the reports have gained strong grounds, especially keeping in view BlackBerry’s exit from Japan. BlackBerry has not received a very strong response from the Asian markets and that is why it is trying to focus more on its primary market to secure as much revenue through its new Z10 smartphone as possible.
The Z10 smartphone is available in the U.K, Canada and UAE, while it will be available in the U.S. soon. These are the major markets for the company that is facing tough competition from Apple and Samsung in the smartphone market. If BlackBerry pulls out of the Korean market, it will be able to save shipping cost and instead dedicate all its energy to the markets from where it is getting better response.
That said, it is essential to note that BlackBerry is eyeing many large markets for its future expansion. However, that supposedly is the long-term plan of the company and in the shorter run it seemingly wants to make the new Z10 smartphone a hit in its prime markets.
If it exits from Korea, BlackBerry will continue to support its existing customers in the country. BlackBerry has partnership with only one carrier, SK Telecom, in the country. The Next Web quoted the company as saying about the rumours:
“BlackBerry enjoys a constructive relationship with trusted partner, SK Telecom, and we will continue to support the carrier’s ongoing BlackBerry sales in Korea. We will continue to provide BlackBerry service and after-sales support to BlackBerry’s Korean customers, both consumers and business users.”
There has been no mention of a possible withdrawal from the Korea market, but the company has not denied the rumours either.
