It was not too long ago when Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer officially made it known that he will be stepping down from his post as CEO within the next 12 months. However, people have already started speculating who will be Ballmer’s successor because Microsoft has not officially revealed a list of short listed candidates for the job. As a result of this speculation a name which grabbed more attention as compared to others was of Nokia’s very own Stephen Elop. Yes That’s true and it’s not a surprise, as Nokia executive has some close ties with Microsoft. Therefore, rumours indicated that Elop is on the shortlist of Microsoft and is likely to replace Ballmer as the new CEO of the company.

Nevertheless, Elop is not the only strong candidate for this job, as reports suggest that Tony Bates, Skype’s manager and the former CEO of VMware and ex-senior executive of Microsoft, Paul Matiz are also on the shortlist. However, the big surprise on the rumoured shortlist is the name of Bill Gates, who is expected to make a comeback, but there are very slim chances that he might once again take up the role of CEO.

Various sources have also placed the name of current head of the newly created Devices and Studios Engineering Group of Microsoft, Julie Larson-Green on that list. These are just a few names that have appeared so far to be the likely successors of Ballmer, but it is anticipated that more names will surface because there is still lot of time left in the retirement of Steve.

But the most significant thing is that the successor of Ballmer should have true leadership qualities, as after Bill Gates Microsoft has been able to produce a product that had revolutionised the world. On top of it, Surface tablet was the first hardware that Microsoft has produced, but Ballmer and his team was not able to lure consumers with the new slate that comes with colour keypads and delicate touch screen.

So whoever will be the successor of Ballmer, he or she has to deal with lots of challenges immediately, as till now Microsoft is resting on its products, which it had created a long while ago. This indicates that the new CEO of the company also has to determine a new line of action for Microsoft, so the earnings of the software giant could also increase.
