On October 18, Google revealed a new Chromebook that will be manufactured by South Korean electronics maker Samsung. The latest device will have all new specs with and is expected to retail at a very favorable $249. The Samsung Chromebook version will do away with the Intel chip predecessor and instead go with an ARM built chip which will make the laptop cheaper. Google is looking to sell the device to Windows or Mac users as a second computer.

The Google Chromebook has not been a massive hit to date but the company has been slowly building on the niche market it has created for its device. Google has upgraded the Chrome OS and the Chromebook hardware over the year and has seen some adoption in schools and business settings. This latest device will be aimed at home users who will keep the laptop as a second device to use around the house to check mail or browse the net.

Samsung  and Google have developed the Chromebook to “be cheaper, faster, and easier to use than other comparable laptops.” This time around the company expects to have the device for sale in a lot more physical retail locations in the US and UK only. The rest of the world will not be getting the device, which will be disappointing to many Canadians.

At the press conference for the Chromebook, SVP of Chrome and Apps Sundar Pichai, made sure that the press understood that the new laptop was different from Windows RT devices which are both more expensive and feature older iterations of the ARM processor. The Wi-Fi-only laptop is also razor thin at 0.8 inches thick and weighs 2.5 pounds. The nifty device supports 1080p video at 30 fps for on its 11.6” display and has 6.5 hours of battery life. There is also 16GB of flash storage, 2GB of RAM, and 100GB Google Drive usage for two years at no extra cost. There are also several ports on the device including one USB 3.0 port, one USB 2.0 port, and an HDMI port.
