Numerous reports have claimed that the 10-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 slate from the South Korean electronics manufacturer will boast an Intel Clover Trail+ process rather than the companies own ARM chip. Now Reuters, a well reputed news site, has confirmed that previous reports regarding the incorporation of Intel processor into Galaxy Tab 3 tablets are true. According to Reuters, “Samsung Electronics has chosen an Intel Corp processor to power a new version of one of its top-tier Android tablets, a source with knowledge of the plans told Reuters, in a major victory for the U.S. chipmaker, which is struggling to find its footing in the mobile market.”
Although, the aforementioned claim will sound odd to many, but if one takes the latest report from the not so reliable Korea Times into consideration, it asserts that Samsung has decided to go with Intel chips because it is perhaps facing yielding issues with its home grown ARM-based Exynos chips. According to the report, “Samsung wants to secure as many processors as possible at better pricing. That’s why Samsung Electronics has recently been diversifying its procurement channel in processor chips as a strategy to stabilize production yields of its in-house Exynos-branded processors.”
On the other hand, Intel is eagerly looking to establish a strong foot holding in the worldwide mobile market, as with the passage of time users are moving away from the laptop PCs and desktop to smartphones, phablets and tablets. Therefore, it is expected that Intel may sell its chips to Samsung at loss-leader deal in order to make its place in the new sector, as it will greatly benefit the company in the future.
Intel chips have previously been integrated into various smartphones including Lenovo and Motorola Razr i, but if Samsung gives the green signal to the chip making company than it will be the first time ever it will feature in a top Android-based tablet. This is positive step for the American Chip maker whose CEO recently claimed that his company was not able to recognize the significance of mobile devices before and squandered an opportunity to win Apples business.
Therefore, it’s the need of the hour that Intel should win contracts from big companies such as Samsung, Sony and other so it would be able to integrate its processors on more and more devices. Nevertheless, at this point in time, it is hard to predict whether Intel would be able to win a big contract or not, as none of the before mentioned reports have been confirmed by the Korean electronics company.
