The last couple of days have seen the mobile and electronics industry going into overload as some the biggest names in the industry have been announcing new devices and show casing upcoming products. Global players like Nokia, Motorola and Amazon have already hit the stage and Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 5 soon. Samsung had a huge release of the Samsung S III only a few months ago and dominated the headlines. The Korean electronics maker didn’t want to be left out of the show this week and made a statement that should cause others to pause and reflect. The current leader in the mobile sector stated that it had sold more than 20 million Galaxy S III devices in the first 100 days of its release. Those are some very big numbers and have dwarf results from some other manufacturers.
Samsung broke down their numbers to show that the Galaxy S III had sold 2.5 million devices in Korea, 4 million in North America, 4.5 million in the rest of Asia and 6 million in Europe.
Comparing these results with other companies is slightly difficult because the manufacturers do not release numbers for the same periods of time but and rough analysis can be performed on the numbers that have been given out. Nokia stated that it has sold 7 million Lumia devices since its release last year and Apple was able to sell 4 million iPhone 4S units on the first weekend of launch. This means that Samsung is in the middle of the two and probably a lot closer to Apple’s sales figures.
Another interesting point to note is that the Apple figures being talked about are for only one device, while the Nokia figures are for their complete range of Lumia smartphones. Samsung’s big numbers are for just one device, the Galaxy SIII, meaning that it has blown Nokia out of the water is breathing down Apple’s neck.
Samsung’s true success is its ability to sell a lot of different types of Phones and not just one up market smartphone. That is why the company was able to take the largest phone maker crown from Nokia this year. The real question is whether it can overtake Apple. It seems likely that Apple will crush previous sales numbers for its iPhones sales as some analysts predict they will be able to get almost 10 million iPhone 5s out the door on the first weekend.
Amazon is the dark horse in this entire scenario. The company has not made any announcements of releasing a smartphone but it is predicted that they will soon and use the same strategy as their Kindle Fire. That means they will use their strong app and service ecosystem to support a device that has toned down features and a lower price.
Predicting a winner in all this would be just guess work and the best thing to really do is to sit back and enjoy the fruits of competition.
