Continuous innovation is what seems to be what Samsung is focusing on as the smartphone and consumer electronics giant is taking another step further by introducing a watch-phone hybrid for users. This wristwatch-like device may be released as soon as this coming September for consumers in select markets before going global.

Sources report that the new device will be named the Galaxy Gear and will allow users to not only check the time, but also make phone calls, surf the web and even send and receive emails. Like its previous devices, the Galaxy Gear is expected to be powered by Google’s Android operating system. Experts also believe that the launch of Galaxy Gear is also aimed towards giving fierce competition to a similar product that Apple is expected to be launching sometime this year as well.

Specifications about the revolutionary product, like battery life, size and wireless connectivity is yet to be revealed by the company. It is also possible that Samsung may be looking towards introducing a whole line-up of the smartwatch instead of just one like most analysts believe.

“It will carve a niche for sure as this is an initial product in the market,” said Chung Chang Won, an analyst at Nomura Holdings Inc. in Seoul, according to Bloomberg. “Wearable devices could be one of the trends in the smartphone market, but I’m not sure yet whether watches or glasses will set the trend.”

The mind-set is definitely changing for the better now as companies are focusing on technology that is more wearable instead of just being take-along. Sony is also expected to be competing in this specific niche and could be months away from turning heads as it looks to make a comeback in the tech industry, which not too many years ago saw it as the dominating force.

An approximated timeframe for the release is said to be in September, but nothing conclusive has been announced by Samsung Electronics as of yet. It is cited by authorities that it could be launched alongside the Note III, which will be a trendy and more advanced version of its previous smartphone and tablet computer combinations.

Furthermore, it is also believed that Samsung’s next smartwatch will be displayed at the IFA trade show in Berlin; which is scheduled to be held on September 4. For Samsung, this is believed to be another moment where it wishes to dominate for years to come over its competitors.
