The Korea Times has recently reported that the Chairman of Samsung electronics, Lee Kun-hee, has finally returned from his three month long trip of Hawaii and Japan and it is expected that some changes could take place in the management of the company soon thanks to the current  patent war with US-based tech giant Apple. The rumour was sparked after Lee Kun-hee talked about a “sense of crisis” upon his arrival, as it indicates a possible shakeup at the management level.

The report in The Korea Times also highlighted the fact that the current patents war with Apple is not the only pending issue which the Chairman is looking to personally resolve. This was not the first time that Kun-hee has went on a lengthy trip, as he has continuously taken such long overseas trips in the past as well and after arriving he has made some major changes in Samsung, which range from managerial changes to new business direction and plans he is personally looking to mull over.

The source also asserted that the shakeup that Kun-hee is planning to put into practice could be declared as early as this Wednesday, April 10, when the Chairman will meet the media in person once again.

“The chairman has so far been consistent in emphasizing crisis, risks and even dangers over the past two decades since he took control of the group,’’ said one Samsung insider.

“Other sources said Lee will himself check several pending issues, such as this year’s investment plan, the ongoing patent dispute with Apple and how to cut reliance on its mobile business,” according to Samsung officials.

“From this week, Lee may instruct top executives to present fine-tuned strategies to help the group towards the next level,’’ said a Samsung executive, asking not to be named.

Rumour also has it that Samsung may possibly invest up to $43.2 billion during this year. However, this investment plan has not been officially confirmed yet. All these rumours indicate that if a press meeting takes place during this week then Samsung is not just going to make just one announcement, if the above reports turns out to be true.

To the extent the patent war between Apple and Samsung is concerned, it surely has taken a lot of time and money of the South Korean company and still the company has failed to turn the decision in their favour. Most probably that is why Samsung’s Chairman senses a crisis.
