An Israeli app developer has created the SayWhat Android app that is meant to be a mix of both voice and text messaging. Users can respond to incoming calls by replying with an emoticon or text or they can utilize the “Can You Talk” button which messages the contact before dialing and confirms if they can receive a call.
The creators of the app want to give mobile users more options to communicate than what is available today. As communication and mobile etiquette gets more complicated, SayWhat is a tool that helps navigate the changing mobile communication landscape. According to the app developer, users can now establish “the agenda of the call” before they pick up the phone.
The app has pre-made text messages like ‘Hi, what’s up?’ or ‘Getting back you’ that are placed in different categories and organized so that they can be easily utilized. Categories include ‘work’, ‘pleasure’, ‘casual’ and ‘love’.
SayWhat is also pursuing specific markets and using emoticons. The developer believes that this is “a proven market for teenagers worldwide”.
Interestingly, Android 4.0 and newer versions of the OS already comes with a Google developed feature called Quick Response. The app gives the user the ability to respond to phone calls with a custom text message.
SayWhat talked about how they are different from the Quick Response feature and said that, “The SayWhat app adds a completely new dimension for the recipient. While you can text back with a response through a reject with a call text option, until now, you had to answer the call to find out what it’s about. The biggest value add of the app is for the recipient who now can see what the call is about before they answer it, helping to set the agenda (similar to an email subject line). The use cases for the app are endless. (Just think how many times are you in a meeting and the phone keeps ringing and ringing and you don’t know whether it’s an emergency or if your husband is just calling to see what’s for dinner). SayWhat answers that critical question of why someone is calling.”
There is also the fact that users can do without the app completely and just manually reject a call and text back the caller. To this the apps CEO stays that, “IM/SMS + call are two separate processes managed by two separate apps. SayWhat utilizes the Android call layer and open XMPP protocol to create the Enhanced Call Information (ECI) technology. By bringing Enhanced Call Information (ECI) into the call we’re creating the call metadata.” He goes on to say that, “Text and emoticons (as well as caller information and photo if available) can play an important role before the call (pick up or reject), during and after the call (call log to remind you what you talked about at a specific date/time).”
The SayWhat Android app is free and will be available for iOS soon. The app has multiple language choices including English, German, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Hebrew.
