Zeebox is a second screen social TV app that can be found on Apple iOS and Google’s Android powered products. The app has now made a move to a new platform and is currently available on BlackBerry smartphones. On December 18, Zeebox launched on Research In Motion’s BlackBerry App World so that users can quickly download the app for devices that run on BlackBerry OS 6 and above.
The major problem with Zeebox on BlackBerry that is already apparent is that it will not have the complete range of features it has on other platforms. Since all focus has been shifted to BlackBerry 10 by RIM, the previous platforms and devices have been left unattended. This means that they do not have the capabilities and features that newer iOS and Android phones posses making it impossible for Zeebox to offer the exact same abilities.
However, Zeebox does offer its core functionality on BlackBerry including acting as a social TV guide. Users can see what programs are hot or which ones are being watched by their friends and favorite stars. The app has also kept its chat feature on BlackBerry and also has integration with Facebook and Twitter. This allows users to invite friends and family so that they can watch shows together. There is also an e-commerce feature that will soon have video-on-demand content.
Zeebox has been working to increase its services and is operational in major markets like the US, United Kingdom, Australia and Ireland. They are also upgrading the app so that Sky and Virgin Media set-top boxes in the UK can be controlled through a smartphone. Zeebox’s other upcoming feature is that it gives broadcasters the chance to develop a dedicated interactive experience for shows so that users can use the app to check in and access the content. This has led to BSkyB, Comcast, NBCUniversal and Viacom choosing the app as their second screen partner.
According to the makers of Zeebox it was “likely” that the app will come to BlackBerry 10 in the future.
