Sony is going big with the announcement of its next generation Xperia Tablet S which will be marketed under the name Xperia Tablet Z. Rumors of Sony’s new slate were already swirling in the past week and it came as no surprise when the anouncment was finally made. The slim and light weight Xperia Tablet Z is a 6.9 mm device with a 19200×1200 pixel “Reality Display”, 1.5Ghz quad-core processor, 8.1mega-pixel rear camera, 32GB internal storage and 2GB of RAM. The Xperia Tablet Z display is the best one yet to come from Sony as none of its predecessors boasted such high resolutions. Plus the incorporation of Sony’s Bravia Engine technology into the 10.1 inch tablet gives it another edge over its forerunners. It is expected that the combination of the Bravia Engine technology and reality display will help the device stand apart from competition.
The 495 grams tablet is also dust and waterproof and weighs 100 grams less than Xperia Tablet S. The 6000mAh battery of Xperia Tablet Z also seems quite potent compared to the previous editions and it is expected that users will experience an improved battery life in the latest version of the slate. Another interesting thing about Tablet Z is that aside from having Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity the slate also offers NFC.
Sony will make this tablet available in two colours black and white and it will be powered by Android Jelly Bean 4.1 that can be updated to 4.2, sometime after the launch. To the extent its launch is concerned, Xperia Tablet Z will hit the shelves in the spring and the Japanese will be the first to get their hands on the device. Canadians may see the product in the country sometime during the second quarter but at this point in time it is not known whether any local carrier is involved. Sony is including the optional LTE connectivity for Canadian users.
