Due to its economic policy, Brazil charges heavy taxes on imported devices which can be troublesome for electronics manufacturers like Sony. To avoid the big expense, the Japanese electronics manufacturer Sony started making its PlayStation 3 gaming console within the country rather than exporting it from Japan. This move would not only help the Japanese company keep the prices within the reach of its Brazilian consumers, but it would also enable Sony to swiftly boost its sales in the video gaming market of the country. Brazil has enforced these heavy duty taxes on the imports of devices, including gaming consoles, so it could support local manufacturers help them grow their businesses within the state. As a result of that the prices of the imported devices usually remain quite high, so a majority of the Brazilian consumers prefer to use PCs to play video games.
Nevertheless, now Brazilians will be able to get their hands on the 250GB edition of PlayStation 3 game console of Sony, that will come with God of War: Ascension, for just R$1,099 or roughly 550 U.S. dollars. Although, Sony has made this decision quite late, as it is said that the company is looking to launch the successor of PS 3 later this year, but in the meantime its gaming console will be able to see some more sales.
CEO of Sony’s game business, Andrew House said that, “Sony Computer Entertainment continues to invest in the Brazil game market as part of our long-term commitment to the country and its gamers. Locally manufacturing PlayStation 3 in Brazil will benefit gamers, retailers, and developers. The local manufacture of PlayStation 3 is expected to infuse the Brazilian economy with approximately $300 million over the next 12 months.”
The head of Sony Computer Entertainment America, Jack Tretton said that, “Brazil is home to some of the most passionate gamers in the world, and we’re focused on providing them with the best entertainment experiences that can only be found on PlayStation. With today’s manufacturing announcement and the amazing lineup of localized games, there’s never been a better time to join the PlayStation family if you live in Brazil.”
It remains to be seen whether Sony will make PS 4 in Brazil or not, but one thing is for sure that the Japanese company was not the first big tech corporation that has set up its plant in Brazil, as Microsoft has already started making its Xb0x 360 game console in the country.
