The Canadian entrepreneurial initiative, Startup Canada, stated on November 27 that it had finished consulting with its entrepreneur network across Canada and were now in the process of creating a plan to guide and focus the energies of the group. Startup Canada got launched in May of 2012 and sees itself as a lobbying group for the entrepreneurs of Canada. The initiative has gotten in touch with 25,000 Canadian entrepreneurs so far with the goal to become a single platform that startups and entrepreneurs will use to communicate their concerns and ideas to the government at the local and federal level.
Adam Chowaniec, chairman of Startup Canada, spoke about the organization, stating that “The world is changing and competition is growing. We need to act with urgency. These problems and some solutions have been discussed for decades but we are running out of time.”
Startup Canada believes that Canadian schools are falling behind due to a lack of focus on startups. Emphasis on entrepreneurship will help children think about a career in the startup industry. The development and creation of new business within Canada is another goal of the organization. The group wants startup communities to spring up across the country and then network and help each other grow while they boost the Canadian economy.
The announcement was made at various glitzy events that Startup Canada has been organizing all across the country including Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Halifax and Edmonton. The latest event took place in Ottawa and brought together entrepreneurs and politicians.
Tony Clement, Treasury Board president, thought the event was “inspiring”. He also added that, “I’m very impressed with what has been achieved to date. This is grassroots, entrepreneur-led and vital.” He also stated the many moves the federal government was making to promote small businesses including the reduction of paperwork and bureaucratic procedures for new firms to gain various government services. However, he did not comment on when the $400 million earmarked by the federal government for entrepreneurial expansion would be released.
