Startup Weekend was organized over the past weekend which was meant to bring up creative new ideas in the field of education and develop them. TechVibes reports that, “This year’s event brought out over 100 participants. 40 pitched startup ideas disrupting everything from the used textbook market to online video learning. Each participant was given 60 seconds to explain their idea and the problem their startup was going to solve. Since the event was designed to solve problems in the education space, educators were given additional voting points to help select companies that would add the most value to the sector.” In this way, an environment was formed where the best of ideas were given and selected to address educational issues that affect everyone.

Twelve companies presented in this event to a panel of five judges. The panel included Lloyed Lobo who is one of the founders of thecloudfactory.io, Dean Mccall who is an advisor for a few companies and also provides advise at Extreme Startups, Jared Gordon who is an investment manager, Aaron Solomon who is an educationist as well as a businessman and mentor and Tarun Sachdeva who is the main person for products at Wattpad. So experts from various backgrounds were present to judge the contest in their relevant capacity.

“The judge selected three winners based each startup on their ability to produce a working product, their business model, and the products educational impact.”

LearningLoop got the first position at Startup Weekend. It is an online method designed to help teachers to communicate information with parents regarding their children. It is an easy to use interface and is accessible to parents on-the-go as it can be accessed through mobile devices anywhere. LearningLoop created a practical demonstration this weekend and their work was highly appreciated. Many parents and educators expressed enthusiasm for this startup and asked for details.

Second place was won by a startup called Smartypants. “Smartypants is mobile app that prompts the user to answer skill-testing, academic questions before being able to access games on their device. The app is customizable, so questions can be varied by skill-level depending on the user.” So this app enhances mental ability and increases general knowledge according to the level set by the user.

TechVibes ads that, “Fieldr is a search engine designed for educators to find budget-friendly activities. Teachers can filter activities based on grade and budget and get access to helpful information such as the learning objectives the field trip will meet and reviews from other teachers.”

Startup weekend was a very well appreciated and successful venture aimed at introducing new ideas in the field of education and the response that LearningLoop has received shows that it will go a long way. It raises expectations from Startup Weekend in Toronto to launch good ideas into working projects like it has done in the past.
