Canalys has recently issued a report according to which downloads of the Google Play, BlackBerry World, the Windows Store and Apple’s App Store have seen a increase of 11 percent in the first quarter of this year in contrast to the holiday season of 2012 when the downloads of all these app stores reached 13.4 billion mark during the period. With this increase the revenue these app stores have earned from in-app purchases, subscriptions and paid apps also increased and touched the $2.2 billion mark, according to the study.

However, the major contributor in this race of downloads was Google’s Play store, as it alone accounted for 51 percent in the collective download total of the app stores thanks to the Android platform that powers more devices than any other platform. In spite of this, the Play store was not able to lead by much numbers, as Apple’s App Store ended up quite close to it and remained the second best contributor.

Nevertheless, the boost in downloads during the first quarter of 2013 did not remain helpful for Android developers, as they failed to make more money from this process. In comparison to the Android, Canalys study reveals, the Apple App Store remained the best, as it has accounted “the largest indexed proportion of revenue between the four stores at around 74%.”

“Apple’s App Store and Google Play remain the heavyweights in the app store world. In comparison, BlackBerry World and the Windows Phone Store remain distant challengers today, though they still should not be ignored,’ said Tim Shepherd, Canalys Senior Analyst. ‘Each of these four stores represents a different market proposition for developers, and remains the primary outlet to reach users on the platforms they serve. BlackBerry and Microsoft particularly need to continue to proactively work to attract fresh, innovative content and services to their respective catalogs, and fill gaps in their inventories. But they also need to increase device sales around BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone 8 to increase the addressable market opportunities on offer to developers.”

Along with the increase in the number of downloads from different app stores, some remarkable growth was also observed in few developing markets like Indonesia, Brazil and South Africa. This growth in the emerging markets was driven by the rapid acceptance of various smart devices. However, aside from these emerging markets strong growth was also witnessed in mature markets as well, as Western Europe saw an increase of 8 percent and 10 percent, whereas North America grew by 8 percent and 6 percent.
