Flurry, an analytics firm, has recently issued a report according to which phablets or hybrid devices that have a screen size from 5-inches to 6.9-inches such as the Samsung Galaxy Note are not doing well in the market as compared to smartphones and bigger tablets. The report points at the fact that smaller phablets hold just a 2 percent share in the total consumer base. The report also revealed that in contrast to smaller phablets, smartphones like iPhone or others handsets which have a screen size between 3.5 to 4.9 inches are quite popular among users and holds a total 69 percent share in the market.

According to iPhoneinCanada, “Flurry, which now detects over 1 billion smartphones and tablets in use around the world every month, noticed activity on more than 200 unique device models. During that, the following 5 groups emerged based on screen size:

Small phones (e.g., most Blackberries), 3.5” or under screens

Medium phones (e.g., iPhone), between 3.5” – 4.9” screens

Phablets (e.g., Galaxy Note), 5.0” – 6.9” screens

Small Tablets (e.g., Kindle Fire), 7.0” – 8.4” screens

Full-size tablets (e.g., the iPad), 8.5” or greater screens”

The hybrid devices or phablets appears to have a mere 3 percent active user, whereas the medium size phones topped the chart with 72 percent active users.

“The top bar in the chart below shows how the top 200 device models break down by form factor in the market. Starting from the left, 16% of devices have screen sizes that are 3.5 inches or fewer in diagonal length. 69% of devices are between 3.5 inches and 4.9 inches, which includes iPhone. The light gray are made up of “phablets” such as the Galaxy Note. The orange are small tablets such as the Kindle Fire and iPad Mini. Finally, the far right shows that 7% of the device models in use are full sized tablets such as the iPad”.

One reason behind the high activity on the medium size phones like iPhone could be that they are easier to carry as compared to the bigger devices therefore consumers love to play games, watch videos and more on them when they are on the move. However, when it comes to opting for the bigger screen when at home or office, users most probably prefer to watch videos or play games over computers or TVs rather than on their phablets.

Therefore, it is anticipated that due to this reason medium sized phones have a strong demand instead of phablets.
