TELUS reported its third quarter earnings for 2012 on November 9 and once again showed industry observers that the Canadian wireless service provider is hot on the heels of Bell and may soon replace the company as the country’s second largest wireless carrier. The report from TELEUS stated that the customer base for the firm had grown 4.8% from last year and totaled 7.56 million. Overall there was a net addition of 111,000 new customers which is actually a 2.6% drop from last year.

TELUS stated that they could have had more subscriptions but “were impacted by delayed customer purchase decisions ahead of the anticipated launch of the new iPhone 5 in late September.” The earnings report also shed some light on wireless revenues which increased by $104 million or 7.4% to make the total $1.5 billion for 2012. The jump in revenue for TELUS came about thanks to higher data usage from smartphone users and better average revenue per user (ARPU), a key industry metric. The wireless carrier has claimed that 63% of total postpaid subscribers, or 6.4 million customers are smartphone users. Furthermore, ARPU has jumped to $61.42 thanks to a $0.90 increase from last year.

In comparison to TELUS, Bell’s third quarter reported showed that it had a total of 7,576,027 subscribers while Rogers listed their user base at 9.43 million.

The quarterly report also came with news about changes in management, as TELUS CFO, Bob McFarlane, retired from his post after 12 years in the job. John Gossling will replace the outgoing executive and bring his CFO and VP experience from CTVglobemedia and Rogers.
