Even before its launch, Apple’s iPad Mini has been a trending topic for a myriad of reasons. At times, the device made headlines because of its top features, other times speculating its release date along with Steve Jobs position of smaller tablets and finally the device’s impressive sales numbers. The device once again finds itself in the news, however this time in relation to a major theft at JFK International Airport.

According to the latest update, thieves managed to sneak into the cargo storage site of JFK airport and were able to steal 3,600 iPad Minis, worth a retail price of $1.5 million. Police shared that the incident took place late on Monday night when two pallets of iPad Minis were found missing from the storage area of the airport.

Police also divulged  that thieves managed to lift these two pallets with the help of an airport forklift and then load them into a large truck. It was also learnt that this loss could have been greater as thieves left behind three more pallets of iPad Mini in a hurry because an airport worker returned from his break and disrupted their plan. So far police have failed to capture these criminals and no official word is out from Apple either. To the extent this stolen batch of iPads is concerned, they seem to have been coming from China for sale in the US.

According to TechCrunch, “Apple is known to be shipping out its first batch of LTE iPad minis this week, so it’s possible this shipment was part of that rollout. If so, it’s possible that means 3,600 expectant Apple fans are going to be disappointed, but Apple could also very theoretically redirect stock destined for store shelves to make up the difference”.
