During his time on stage at All Things D’s D 11 conference that was held on Tuesday, May 29th, Tim Cook not only talked about Apple, but for the first time he also shared his thoughts on wearable devices. However, in his view, “The likelihood that [Google Glass] has a broad range appeal is hard to see. I think wearables is incredibly interesting, it could be a profound area,” Cook added. According to Cook, Google Glass had a number of ‘positives’.
But, “I wear glasses because I have to…I don’t know a lot of people that wear them that don’t have to. People that do wear them want them to be light and unobtrusive, they generally want them to reflect their fashion and their style.”
“I wear this, it’s a FuelBand. It’s designed for a specific use…the ones that are doing more than one thing…there’s nothing great out there that I’ve seen. There’s nothing that’s going to convince a kid to wear glasses or a watch or a band who has never worn one to do so, that I’ve seen,” Cook said while talking about his wrist computer.
In reply to Mossberg’s question, Cook said that, “I think the wrist is interesting. If we had a room full of 10 to 20 year olds and said everyone stand up that just has a watch on…I’m not sure anyone would stand up. Their watch is this,” iPhone 5, he said by holding up his white smartphone.
However, when Mossberg talked about the possibilities of seeing something new besides wearables, Cook agreed with him and said that other sensors could be answer to wrist mounted devices. Though, Apple’s CEO is not bullish on Google Glass, he was also not too optimistic about the wrist device, as he should have been. Maybe the answer was an Apple CEO trying to misguide people regarding upcoming products, so they can be secret until the company finally launches new devices.
Nevertheless, Cook did not misinform people when he talked about the appointment of Lisa Jackson. The new recruit was working as the chief of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and will now join Apple. Here is what Cook said, “Lisa Jackson is joining Apple. She recently left the EPA, and she’ll now be coordinating these efforts across the company. She’ll report to me. I like her a lot, and she’s a chemical engineer by background. I actually forget the actual title, but she’ll continue to coordinate our environmental efforts across Apple.”
