Startup Edmonton‘s downtown campus got a visit from Tony Clement, the President of the Treasury Board, during his visit tot he Canadian city. The government official was in Edmonton to show his support for the start up ecosystem in the area and show that the government was behind its innovators and entrepreneurs. The Honorable Minister also listened to the opinions of the startup community to figure out more ways the government could help the entrepreneurs in Canada become successful. Clement stated that, “High-impact, fast-growing startup companies are crucial to job creation and Canada’s long-term prosperity. Organizations like Startup Edmonton are dynamic hubs for unleashing Canada’s entrepreneurial potential. Our Government is a strong supporter of the startup community. Investing in startups is an investment in our future.”
CEO of Startup Edmonton, Ken Bautista, also added his thoughts by saying that, “Canadian entrepreneurs have amazing potential. Our role is to help them see not only the opportunities that are out there, but also show our support in actively seeing ideas become realities. Any help the Government of Canada can provide supporting accelerators and accessing talent through the Startup Visa Canada program helps pave the way for startups to grow big—from Canada.”
The minister spoke about the governments Economic Action Plan 2013 and mentioned that it included “a number of initiatives targeted at fostering innovative new businesses.” He pointed out the $60 million that had been set aside to expand the services of incubators and accelerators. The minister also talked about the $100 million the Business Development Bank of Canada was going to inject into into startups leaving accelerator programs while also emphasizing the $20 million the government was providing to startups so they could get the latest research and development services from Canadian universities. The minister was sure to talk about Canadian youth and the support the government was going to provide these entrepreneurs through the $18 million and the Canadian Youth Business Foundation.
Launched in 2009, Startup Edmonton is a campus, co-workspace and accelerator for startups in the area. The group is a non profit and counts as members both highly experienced entrepreneurs as well as young innovators. On its website the organizations claims that, “Startup Edmonton is a workspace and community dedicated to igniting creativity and entrepreneurial thinking in our city. We achieve this by creating collisions between developers, designers, creators, makers, artists, entrepreneurs and companies through space, meetups, and programs.”
